Plan Sponsor & Minority Manager Consortium 2010

The Consortium | New Terrain. New Talent .

With more than 350 in attendance—including minority and emerging managers, plan sponsors, consultants and other industry influencers—the focus of our seventh annual gathering was on discovering new talent and exploring the new terrain of  investing within the emerging manager  arena.

The breakfast session set the stage for the candid exchange that has come to define The Consortium for the past six years. Kelly Williams, Co-Head, Credit Suisse Customized Fund Investment Group opened the day with a perspective on alternatives and the challenges LPs are facing in terms of identifying and managing investments.

James Mason, Managing Partner, Parish Capital Advisors, LLP gave audience members an opportunity to compare their thinking with that of members of the esteemed panel of LPs, including James Lewis, Treasurer, State of New Mexico; Janet Cowell, Treasurer, State of North Carolina; John Alouf, Director of Private Equity, Virginia Retirement System. In some cases the differences in investor interest and audience response were stark, in others the alignment was perfectly aligned.

Throughout the early morning discussions, speakers and audience members shared invaluable insights regarding their investment approach, and ways in which their teams identify and assess investment opportunities. The conversations were candid and enlightening.

Luncheon remarks by Cheryl Alston, Executive Director, Employees’ Retirement Fund of the City of Dallas and Robert Greene, Trustee, Virginia Retirement System helped put current trends and investment thinking at the plan sponsor in perspective.  Our luncheon keynote, Eric Eve, 1st Deputy Comptroller, City of New York capsulated New York City’s emerging manager programs and the Comptroller’s continued focus on this space.

Take a Look at the New Talent

This year’s Consortium audience included more than 158 managers in attendance—a reflection of the growth in new fund formations, even in today’s volatile economic conditions:

35% African American-owned firms
25% Women-owned firms
14% Asian-owned firms
12% Latino/Latina-owned firms
2% American Indian-owned firms

The Bootcamp: Launch Strong, Launch Smart

It was standing room only at The Bootcamp—the first annual gathering focused on helping emerging managers navigate the process of launching their firms, raising funds and working with LPs.

The topics covered ranged from back office operations and LP communications to working with consultants. The “live” elevator pitch session capped off the day. Led by Ellen Cahill, President of Cahill Associates, four emerging managers stepped up to the microphone and made their pitch to our panel, including Chris Farrington, Partner, Centinela Capital Partners, LLC; Tim Legesse, Investment Officer, California Public Employees’ Retirement System; and Solange Fernandez Brooks, Portfolio Manager, Investment Executive Unit - California State Teachers’ Retirement System. The feedback was insightful and practical—and useful to all in the room. Immediately after one pitch, the fund founder was approached by a top fund of fund manager for a more in-depth dialogue. From the questions, conversations and energy in the room, it was clear that the need among managers for this type of focused educational and networking forum is strong. RG & Associates is looking forward to an even bigger Bootcamp year two.

VIP Connect

With nearly 200 registered participants, the afternoon Value Information Partnership | VIP Connect (a long-standing part of the Consortium) sparked great dialogue and networking opportunities. Many of the plan sponsors in attendance participated, providing emerging managers with a tremendous opportunity for one-on-one dialogue. The new format, in which all participants select their meeting rotation via a first-come, first-served reservation system proved effective.

“Standing O” to Our Advisory & Planning Committees

RG & Associates extends a special thank you to the members of the 2010 Advisory Committee and Planning Committee—their involvement, ideas and energy contributed greatly to the success and active engagement of all participants.
